Cut to Length From Coil
Cut to Length from Coil (CTL) – High-Accuracy Coil to Sheet Cutting
HL Metal’s cut to length from coil service transforms steel and aluminum coils into perfectly flat sheets with tight length and squareness control. Leveraging a modern CTL line—uncoiler, precision leveler, encoder-driven length measurement and a synchronized flying shear—we deliver repeatable quality for demanding fabrication, press, and assembly operations.
What Does “Cut to Length from Coil” Mean?
In a CTL line, a continuously wound coil is unwound, straightened and cut into discrete sheets that match the exact length the application requires. Unlike slitting, which partitions coil width into narrower strips, CTL focuses on the length dimension while preserving full or trimmed width. Aerospace panels, HVAC enclosures, vehicle body-in-white skins, and architectural façades rely on stable flatness and consistent length to accelerate downstream bending, forming and welding without rework.
Before a run, we analyze the grade × thickness × width matrix, surface class (oiled, film-laminated, dry), and end-use process window. Parameters for leveler roll penetration, cascade skew, entry/exit tensions, and line speed are set to reconcile two goals: dimensional precision and surface integrity.
How Our CTL Line Works
- Uncoiling & Threading: The coil is centered, secured on the mandrel and guided through the entry section to minimize wander.
- Precision Leveling: A multi-roll leveler mitigates coil memory and residual stress. Tuned roll penetration and backup flights compress wave, coil set and crossbow while limiting work hardening.
- Length Measurement: High-resolution encoder feedback governs length control; filtering suppresses slip or vibration artifacts at speed.
- Flying Shear Cutting: The shear carriage synchronizes with strip velocity to deliver a clean, square cut without interrupting line motion.
- Automated Stacking & Handling: Air-float or vacuum-assisted stackers place sheets gently, avoiding print-through on sensitive finishes.
- Inspection & Labeling: Sheet counts, length audits, visual checks and traceability labels complete the cycle.
Edge trimming, protective film application, and interleaving paper can be integrated when required.
Materials We Process
Galvanized Steel (GI/GL)
Corrosion resistance and paintability for HVAC ducts, façades and light-gauge structures. Oiled or dry; film on request.
Cold-Rolled (CR / DC01–DC03)
Tight dimensional stability, low roughness and good formability. Clean edges and high flatness shorten press cycles.
Pickled & Oiled HRP / Hot-Rolled HR
Structural fabrications benefit from scale-free HRP surfaces; HR serves cost-focused applications.
Stainless & Aluminum
AISI 304/316 and 1xxx–6xxx series with protective films and low-mark stacking options for cosmetic surfaces.
Capabilities & Typical Tolerances
Ranges are indicative; final limits are confirmed during order acknowledgement.
Parameter | Typical Range | Notes |
---|---|---|
Thickness (t) | ≈ 0.40 mm – ≈ 15.00 mm | Heavy-gauge setups evaluated per project. |
Coil Width (w) | ≈ 300 mm – ≈ 1,600 / 2,000 mm | Dependent on line width and coil spec. |
Sheet Length (L) | ≈ 300 mm – ≈ 12,000+ mm | Custom stacking plans for long panels. |
Length Tolerance | ±0.5 – ±1.5 mm (typical) | Varies with material, line speed and shear sync. |
Flatness | Project-defined | Achieved via leveling and tension control. |
Edge Condition | Sheared, clean | Edge trimming/conditioning on request. |
Acceptance criteria follow customer specs and relevant EN/ISO norms where applicable.
Engineering-Led Quality Assurance
Quality starts with the coil. Certificates are audited, heat/lot traceability is validated and the planned leveling regime is aligned to the grade–thickness–width combination. During production, SPC checkpoints cover length, squareness and visual surface. For sensitive finishes, contact points, roller cleanliness and stacking pressure are monitored to avoid marks.
Dimensional Integrity
- Encoder-validated length at defined sampling frequency
- Diagonal checks for squareness when specified
- Sheet count verification and pallet pattern audits
Surface Care
- Roller hygiene plan; no abrasive carry-over
- Interleaving paper or film for stainless/aluminum
- Glide-assisted stacking to minimize scuffing
Traceability
- Coil heat/lot on pallet labels
- Batch-level packing lists and sheet counts
- Photo documentation on request
Packaging & Export Logistics
Domestic and international shipments are prepared with packaging tuned to transit risk and onsite handling. Options include wooden pallets, corner protection, strapping, VCI oil/film or dry packing, and custom pallet sizes aligned to racking or containerization plans. Documentation can include packing lists, CMR, and labels aligned with ERP item codes.
- Export-ready pallets with moisture barriers when needed
- Bundles grouped by job/operation sequence
- Load plans that protect edges and maximize yield

Frequently Asked Questions
- How is CTL different from shearing sheets from stock?
- CTL offers tighter length control over long runs, improved flatness through dedicated leveling, and preserved traceability from coil to pallet.
- Can slitting be combined with CTL for custom widths and lengths?
- Yes. We slit to target width, then CTL to final length. Many enclosure and panel programs use this tandem approach.
- Do you provide protective film on stainless and aluminum?
- We support film application and paper interleaving, and adapt stacking pressure to sensitive finishes.
- What inspection records can be shared?
- Length checks, sheet counts, visual notes and traceability data can be appended to the delivery dossier.
- What if my part requires extremely tight flatness?
- We iterate leveler settings, adjust line tension and set conservative speeds to favor flatness over cycle time.
