Hot Rolled Pickled Steel Sheet
Hot Rolled Pickled Steel Sheet & Plate – HRP / HRPO (S235 / S275 / S355)
Hot rolled pickled steel sheet – often called HRP steel sheet, hot rolled pickled sheet, pickled and oiled steel sheet, hot rolled PO sheet, HRPO sheet metal – is produced by descaling hot rolled black steel through an acid pickling line and applying a thin oil film to protect the surface. The result is a hot rolled descaled steel sheet with improved surface quality, better suitability for laser cutting and welding, and more consistent performance in fabrication.
HL Metal supplies S235 HRPO sheet, S275 HRPO sheet and S355 HRPO sheet according to HRP sheet EN 10025 S235 S275 S355 standards, available both as hot rolled pickled steel coil and cut sheet. Our range covers standard and custom hot rolled pickled sheet dimensions, with typical stock formats in sheet and plate form for structural and industrial applications.

What Is Hot Rolled Pickled Steel Sheet?
Hot rolled pickled steel sheet starts as a conventional hot rolled black steel coil. During hot rolling, an oxide scale layer naturally forms on the surface. In many applications this mill scale is undesirable – it reduces paint adhesion, complicates welding and causes additional preparation work before cutting or forming.
To overcome this, the black coil is passed through a pickling line, where the oxide scale is removed in a controlled acid bath. The product is then rinsed, dried and usually coated with a thin oil layer, resulting in pickled and oiled steel sheet (often abbreviated as HRPO sheet metal or hot rolled PO sheet). When delivered without oiling, the product is also known as hot rolled descaled steel sheet or hot rolled cleaned steel sheet.
Compared with standard hot rolled black sheet, HRP steel sheet offers:
- Clean, descaled surface suitable for painting, coating and welding
- Improved and more consistent performance in hot rolled pickled sheet metal for laser cutting
- Reduced preparation time (no need for extensive grinding or blasting before fabrication)
- Stable mechanical properties, as defined by HRP sheet EN 10025 S235 S275 S355
HRP / HRPO Production Process & Surface Quality
The typical process for producing hot rolled pickled and oiled steel sheet for fabrication consists of:
- 1. Hot rolling: Slabs are rolled at high temperature to produce hot rolled black coils, which are the base material for HRP steel sheet.
- 2. Pickling (descaling): Coils are passed through an acid bath that removes the mill scale. This step creates a hot rolled cleaned steel sheet with a uniform metallic surface.
- 3. Rinsing & drying: After pickling, the strip is rinsed and dried to ensure the surface is free from residues.
- 4. Oiling (optional): A thin layer of oil is applied to minimise corrosion during storage and transport, resulting in pickled and oiled steel sheet or HRPO steel sheet stock.
- 5. Recoiling / cut-to-length: The strip is recoiled as hot rolled pickled steel coil or cut into sheets and plates for direct use.
Thanks to this process, hot rolled pickled steel sheet surface quality is significantly better than that of untreated black hot rolled material. This makes HRP particularly attractive for welding, bending, laser cutting and painting, where surface cleanliness and consistency matter.
Grades & Mechanical Properties – S235 / S275 / S355 HRP Steel Sheet
HL Metal offers hot rolled pickled sheet EN 10025 grades in the widely used structural class: S235 pickled steel sheet, S275 HRP sheet and S355 HRP sheet. The base mechanical properties are similar to their hot rolled black equivalents, but with the advantage of a pickled surface.
| Grade | Standard | Typical Yield Strength (MPa) | Typical Tensile Strength (MPa) | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S235 HRP / HRPO | EN 10025-2 | ≈ 235 | ≈ 360–510 | General structural work, brackets, light frames, S235 HRPO sheet for fabrication and welding. |
| S275 HRP / HRPO | EN 10025-2 | ≈ 275 | ≈ 370–530 | Medium-strength structures, machinery frames, S275 HRPO sheet for laser-cut parts. |
| S355 HRP / HRPO | EN 10025-2 | ≈ 355 | ≈ 470–630 | Higher-strength structural members, heavy fabrication, S355 HRPO sheet for demanding industrial projects. |
HRPO steel sheet mechanical properties are primarily defined by the EN 10025 base grade. The pickling and oiling process improves surface condition while preserving the structural performance of S235 / S275 / S355 steels.

Understanding Steel Sheets and Their Varieties
Steel sheets are one of the most essential materials in modern construction, manufacturing, and industrial production. They are available in various grades, surface finishes, and thicknesses, each designed to serve a specific purpose. Choosing the right type of steel sheet is critical for ensuring performance, durability, and cost-efficiency in any project.
Hot Rolled Steel Sheets
Hot rolled sheets are manufactured at high temperatures, making them ideal for structural components where surface appearance is not the main concern. Their main advantages include strength, formability, and affordability. They are widely used in welding, construction, and automotive parts where precise dimensions are not required.
Cold Rolled Steel Sheets
Cold rolled sheets are produced by further processing hot rolled sheets at room temperature. This leads to tighter thickness tolerances and a smoother surface. These sheets are commonly used in applications that require high precision and a clean surface finish, such as household appliances, office furniture, and automotive panels.
Galvanized Steel Sheets
Galvanized sheets are coated with a layer of zinc to provide corrosion resistance. They are especially suited for outdoor environments and moist conditions. Roofing, fencing, and ductwork are some of the common use cases where galvanized sheets are preferred due to their extended service life.
Pickled and Oiled Steel Sheets (HRP)
These are hot rolled sheets that have been descaled through acid pickling and then optionally oiled to prevent rust. They combine the strength of hot rolled steel with a cleaner surface, making them suitable for further processing like cutting or forming.
Stainless Steel Sheets
Stainless steel sheets are known for their resistance to corrosion and aesthetic appearance. They are used in kitchens, medical equipment, architectural projects, and chemical processing industries. Grades such as 304 and 316 are among the most popular options.
Checkered / Patterned Sheets
These steel sheets feature embossed or patterned surfaces (such as tear drop or diamond shapes), which provide slip resistance. They are often used in flooring for industrial platforms, stairs, and walkways.
Pre-Painted and Coated Sheets
These sheets come pre-coated with paint or PVC film, offering a decorative and protective layer. They are used in interior decoration, siding, cladding, and advertising panels. Color-coated steel offers both aesthetic value and durability.
How to Choose the Right Steel Sheet?
